Peninsula resident, Keith Reins (1471 Foster Rd.), will compete at the Fleadh Cheoil, the All-Ireland competition for Irish instrumental and vocal music and dance, in Ennis, County Clare, this August. The Fleadh Cheoil is the Olympics of Irish traditional music. To be selected to compete, participants must qualify at regional fleadaheanna (plural for fleadh), held in Ireland and various locations globally. Two regional fleadaheanna are held in North America; each may send up to three competitors in each category to Ireland. Keith will compete on guitar.
The annual Fleadh Choil began in 1951, sponsored by Comhaltas Ceoltoire Eireann, an organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of traditional Irish music, dance and language. Over 400,000 people are expected to attend this event with over 12,000 competitors in many competitions and age groups. The Fleadh is expected to attract a television audience of over one million viewers.
Keith will perform with flute player, Frank Claudy, of Bettendorf, who also qualified for the Fleadh in a different competition.
Keith performs in the Iowa City based eclectic Irish band, The Beggarmen (www.beggarmen.com). Locally, The Beggarmen can be heard this summer at the Prairie Land Music Festival (prairielandmusicfest.org), June 26; Iowa City Farmer's Market, July 23; Iowa City Ped Mall Friday Night Concert Series, August 5; and Rock the Block at the NewBo City Market in Cedar Rapids, September 30.
Keith also performs with the Quad Cities based Big River Reel Time Band and with his project, Folk Songs You Never Sang in Grade School (www.folksongsyouneversang.com).
